2023년 섬진강국제실험예술제에 붙이며.

한국에 연간 3천 개 이상의 축제가 열린다고 합니다. 
축제를 꽃에 비유한다면 한국은 어느덧 연중 축제 꽃동산 같은 나라가 되었습니다. 개나리, 진달래, 철쭉, 목련, 장미, 백합, 수선, 벚꽃, 유채화, 백일홍, 라일락, 명자꽃, 매화꽃, 산수유....저마다 매력과 꽃말을 가진 꽃처럼 축제가 피어나는 것이지요. 
축제 용어를 쓰자면 축제는 예술 축제, 추수 감사제, 문화유산 축제, 자연 축제, 역사 인물 축제, 지역 특산물 축제, 테마 형 축제, 놀이 축제 등 다양합니다. 
이중 섬진강국제실험예술제는 예술, 테마, 자연과 지역을 실험적으로 담아내는 축제입니다. 축제는 지역의 꽃 같은 특성을 담아내며 자연과 공동체의 한 해 노고에 진심 감사하고 지역민들이 힘을 보태 만들어내며 세상에 어떤 메시지를 던집니다. 
자연과 지역으로만 보면 곡성은 남원, 구례와 함께 섬진강 중상류에 위치하며 꽃나무길, 기찻길, 사람 길, 찻길, 자전거길 다섯 개 길이 강을 따라 흐르는 곳입니다. 
역사가 담긴 압록과 심청전 이야기, 도깨비 테마가 있고 백세미, 미실란 그리고 무엇보다 사람 이야기와 섬진강을 사랑하는 사람들이 사는 곳입니다. 
유명한 기차마을 옆에 올해부터는 드넓은 ‘동화정원’이 세상에 첫선을 보입니다. 그 동화정원 꽃 속에서 국내외 예술가들이 다양한 참여 프로그램으로 여러분과 함께하고 또한 국내에서는 보기 드물게 곡성의 수고로운 가축들과 함께 하는 동물 콘서트도 준비하고 있습니다. 예술, 생태, 농업을 담으려는 국내 유일의 축제 섬진강국제실험예술제의 지향이니까요. 

곡성에서 3회차 열리는 섬진강국제실험예술제는 서울, 제주도를 거쳐 20회가 훌쩍 넘는 연륜 있는 국제예술축제입니다. 이 예술제는 불꽃놀이, 메인 무대와 음향 조명, 연예인, 푸드 트럭, 야간 행사, 중복 아이템 등이 없습니다. 화려하지도 않고 떠들썩하지도 않습니다. 큰 축제에 가보신 분이라면 작아 보일 겁니다. 
그러나 “이런 축제는 어디에도 없다.”라는 것에 다 동의하실 겁니다. 
그리고 “기후 위기, 소비 만능, 스마트폰에 빠진 무뇌 시대에 이런 축제가 정말 소중해!”에도 쩜을 찍으실 겁니다. 
섬진강+국제+실험+예술+축제 5개 요소를 다 담은 이름답게 지난 2년간 섬진강국제실험예술제를 경험한 분들은 “오, 실험이란 게 이런 거야!”, “놀라워”, “새롭습니다. 곡성을 다시 보게 되었어요”, “그 마음이 따뜻해요. 내년에도 다시 아이들과 올래요.” 같은 반응을 보입니다. 그게 고마워서 우리는 또 열심히 생각하고 공감하고 아이템을 찾고 섬진과 곡성과 사람을 계속 연구하게 됩니다. 
우리 예술제는 규모와 감탄과 흥분보다는 감동과 공감 그리고 생각을 추구합니다. 
이 시끄러운 세상에 이런 축제 하나쯤은 있어야지요.
섬진강이잖아요, 
곡성이잖아요, 
영혼의 포옹이 필요한 세상이잖아요.

Among them, the Seomjingang International Experimental Arts Festival is a festival that experimentally captures art, themes, nature, and regions. The festival captures the flower-like characteristics of the region, is truly grateful for the hard work of nature and the community, and the local people add strength to create it and send a message to the world.

In terms of nature and region alone, Gokseong is located in the middle and upper reaches of the Seomjingang River along with Namwon and Gurye, and five paths, including the Flower Tree Road, Train Road, People's Road, Tea Road, and Bicycle Road, flow along the river. 
There are Yalu, Simcheongjeon, and Dokkaebi themes containing history, and Baekseemi, Misilan, and above all, it is a place where people who love the Seomjingang River live. 
Next to the famous train village, the spacious "Donghwa Garden" will be introduced to the world for the first time from this year. In the fairy tale garden, artists from home and abroad will welcome you with various participation programs, and we are also preparing animal concerts with livestock in Gokseong, which is rare in Korea. This is because it is the goal of the Seomjingang International Experimental Art Festival, the only festival in Korea that contains art, ecology, and agriculture.

The Seomjingang International Experimental Art Festival, which will be held for the third time in Gokseong, is an international art festival with more than 20 years of experience through Seoul and Jeju Island. The festival has no fireworks, main stage and sound lights, entertainers, food trucks, night events, and duplicate items. It's not fancy, it's not noisy. If you've been to a big festival, you might look small.
But everyone will agree. "There is no festival like this anywhere."
And you'll understand how precious these pure festivals are in an era of climate crisis, consumerism, and smartphone-driven consumerism.
Those who have experienced the two-year "Seomjingang International Experimental Art Festival," which includes all five elements of the Seomjingang River + International + Experimental + Art + Festival, say, "Oh, this is what experiments are like!" "It's amazing," and "It's new." I got to see Gokseong again." "That heart is warm." I want to come back with the kids next year." They react the same way. Thanks to that, we think hard, empathize, find items, and continue to study Seomjin, Gokseong, and people.
Our art festival pursues emotion, empathy, and thoughts rather than scale, admiration, and excitement.
